For singers living in the UAE, sandstorm season can present unique challenges. While many people notice the impact of dust and dry air on their eyes or skin, the voice is often affected as well.

Whether you are a professional vocalist, a choir member, or simply enjoy singing as a hobby, understanding how to care for your voice when singing during sandstorm season can help you maintain vocal health and continue singing comfortably.

Fortunately, with a few sensible precautions, it is possible to protect your voice and minimise the effects of dusty conditions.

Good vocal care during this period is not about stopping your singing entirely, but about learning how to adjust intelligently to the environment.

How Sandstorms Affect the Voice

During a sandstorm, fine dust particles become suspended in the air and can be inhaled into the respiratory system.

At the same time, humidity levels often decrease, creating a drier environment for the vocal folds.

The voice functions best when the vocal folds remain well-hydrated and free from irritation.

Dust, dryness and airborne particles can lead to throat irritation, increased mucus production, frequent throat clearing, dryness, discomfort, reduced vocal flexibility and vocal fatigue during longer singing sessions.

Some singers may also notice that high notes feel less reliable, the voice feels heavier, or that their tone becomes less clear than usual.

These changes do not necessarily mean something is seriously wrong; they are often signs that the voice is responding to environmental irritation and needs gentler care.

Prioritise Hydration

One of the most effective ways to support the voice during sandstorm season is through proper hydration.

Water helps maintain healthy vocal fold function and can reduce some of the effects of dry air.

Rather than drinking large amounts at once, aim to stay consistently hydrated throughout the day.

This is especially important in Dubai, where air conditioning, heat and dry weather can already place additional demands on the voice.

Warm drinks may also provide temporary comfort, although water remains the most important source of hydration for vocal health.

Some singers also find steam inhalation helpful for soothing dryness, as long as it is used gently and safely.

Avoid Excessive Throat Clearing

Dust can create the sensation that something is stuck in the throat, leading many singers to clear their throat repeatedly.

Unfortunately, forceful throat clearing can create additional irritation by causing the vocal folds to collide more aggressively.

Over time, this can make the throat feel even more uncomfortable and may increase vocal fatigue.

Instead, try taking a sip of water, swallowing gently, performing a light hum or using gentle lip trills.

These approaches are often kinder to the voice while helping relieve discomfort.

If the sensation continues, it is usually better to rest the voice briefly rather than trying to force it to feel normal.

Limit Outdoor Exposure When Possible

During periods of heavy dust, limiting unnecessary outdoor exposure can help reduce irritation.

If you need to spend time outside, consider wearing a mask designed to filter fine particles.

This may help reduce the amount of dust reaching the respiratory system and vocal tract, particularly on days when visibility is poor or the air feels noticeably heavy.

Once indoors, washing your face, drinking water and spending time in a cleaner indoor environment can help minimise lingering irritation.

For singers, creating a calm and well-ventilated practice space can make a meaningful difference during sandstorm season.

Adjust Your Singing Expectations

Many singers become frustrated when their voice does not respond normally during difficult weather conditions.

However, vocal performance naturally fluctuates in response to environmental factors.

During sandstorm periods, it may be wise to reduce the intensity of practice sessions and focus on maintaining rather than pushing your voice.

This can be an excellent time to work on musical interpretation, rhythm exercises, sight-singing, ear training, music theory or score study.

You can also practise lyrics, phrasing and emotional delivery without demanding full vocal power.

Not every practice session needs to involve maximum vocal effort.

Sometimes, a thoughtful and lighter session can be far more beneficial than forcing the voice through discomfort.

Warm Up Carefully

A gentle and thorough warm-up becomes even more important when the voice feels dry or sensitive.

Begin with light exercises such as humming, lip trills and comfortable sirens before progressing into more demanding vocal work.

These exercises allow the voice to begin moving without unnecessary pressure and help you assess how your voice feels on that particular day.

Avoid forcing volume, range or power too early in the session.

Giving the voice time to adjust can help prevent unnecessary strain.

If your voice feels resistant, it is usually better to stay within a comfortable range and focus on ease rather than intensity.

Monitor Signs of Irritation

If symptoms persist for several days, it is important to pay attention to what your voice is telling you.

Warning signs may include persistent hoarseness, vocal pain, difficulty producing sound, significant loss of range or ongoing coughing during singing.

These symptoms should not be ignored, especially if they interfere with normal speaking or singing.

In such cases, reducing vocal load and seeking professional advice may be appropriate.

A singing teacher can help you adjust your technique, but ongoing pain or vocal difficulty should be assessed by a qualified medical professional.

Maintaining Vocal Health Throughout the Season

While sandstorms can create temporary challenges for singers, they do not need to prevent productive and enjoyable singing.

By staying hydrated, protecting your respiratory system, warming up carefully and adjusting your practice habits when necessary, you can continue to sing comfortably and confidently throughout the season.

The key is to listen carefully to your body and recognise that vocal care is part of good musicianship.

A resilient voice is not built by forcing through every difficulty, but by developing awareness, patience and healthy habits.

At S&C Singing, we help adult singers develop healthy vocal habits that support long-term vocal wellbeing in all conditions.

With proper technique and sensible vocal care, your voice can remain resilient, flexible and expressive throughout the year.
